When Outward Success Is No Longer Enough—with Jeffrey Eisen

Have you ever worked so hard to build a life that you forgot to ask whether it still feels like yours?
You have the experience, the responsibilities, and perhaps the title you once wanted. From the outside, things look good. But somewhere in the middle of living that life, you begin to feel a quiet longing.
More meaning. More freedom. More room to be yourself.
It can be difficult to explain that feeling, especially when you have so much to be grateful for. Yet gratitude and longing can exist together. You can appreciate what you have built and still recognize that something within you is changing.
That question sits at the heart of my conversation with Jeffrey Eisen on Just Be True ~ A Soul-Led Podcast: What happens when outward success is no longer enough?
When Your Definition of Success Changes
Jeffrey’s journey took him from leading a successful steel company into spiritual teaching, coaching, and channeling. His experience opens up a conversation about identity, inner guidance, and what it means to follow a direction that looks very different from the life you once imagined.
For many of us, success begins with expectations we absorb along the way: find a dependable career, work hard, earn more, and keep moving forward.
Those goals can serve us for years. But there may come a point when we need to ask whether they still reflect what matters to us.
Perhaps you want more time with the people you love. Perhaps you feel drawn to create, teach, or explore something you have put aside. Or perhaps you simply want your days to feel more meaningful.
Recognizing that change can be uncomfortable. It asks us to reconsider choices that once felt settled.
My Own Experience of an Unexpected Ending
This conversation felt personal to me.
For 22 years, I worked in the Federal Government, first as a contractor and then as a federal employee. That career was a significant part of my life. It provided structure, responsibility, relationships, and a familiar answer when someone asked what I did.
When my federal career ended through a reduction in force, the change reached beyond employment. It brought questions about identity, purpose, and what I wanted the next chapter of my life to hold.
An unexpected ending does not arrive with a complete set of instructions. There are practical concerns to work through alongside the deeper questions.
But over the past 18 months, my journey has continued to unfold. Through Just Be True, this podcast, and my spiritual work, I have found work that I love doing every day.
I know my purpose more clearly now. And I can still feel more change happening.
Knowing what matters to you does not mean you know exactly how everything will develop. Sometimes you discover the next part by participating in the life that is unfolding.
Finding Yourself in the Quiet
One part of transition that we do not always discuss is the quiet that follows a familiar chapter.
When your days are no longer organized around the same role or routine, there is space to notice things you may have pushed aside.
What do I actually enjoy?
What am I continuing because it is familiar?
What would I like to explore if I gave myself permission?
That space can feel peaceful on one day and uncertain on another. You may feel excited about your direction while wishing someone could tell you how it will all turn out.
I am learning to allow both feelings. I can love what I am doing and still have questions. I can trust my direction while continuing to make adjustments.
Giving Yourself Permission to Want Something Different
Wanting something different does not erase the value of what came before.
The years you spent building a career, caring for others, or working toward a goal still matter. Your skills and experiences come with you, even when the setting changes.
You also do not need to make a dramatic decision to begin exploring what feels meaningful now.
You might take a class, return to a creative interest, have an honest conversation, or set aside a little time for something you keep postponing.
Those choices give you information. They help you notice what holds your interest, where you feel connected, and what you want to make more room for.
A Question to Take With You
If your life looks successful but something within you is asking for more, I invite you to approach that feeling with curiosity.
What would make your life feel richer beyond what you achieve or accumulate?
Your answer may be different from what it was five or ten years ago. Give yourself time to hear it.
