She Didn’t Choose the Journey—The Journey Chose Her

She Didn’t Choose the Journey—The Journey Chose Her

There are journeys we choose.

And then there are journeys that choose us.

They arrive without an invitation. They interrupt the life we thought we were going to live. They challenge what we believed about ourselves, other people, and sometimes even the world around us.

At first, we may not be able to see any meaning in them at all.

We simply know that life has changed.

In this week’s episode of Just Be True ~ A Soul-Led Podcast, I sit down with Barb for a conversation about trauma, healing, personal transformation, and what can happen when the experiences we never would have chosen become part of the work we are eventually called to do.

When Life Changes the Direction

I think many of us have an idea of how our lives are supposed to unfold.

We make plans. We build careers. We create relationships. We imagine what the next five or ten years might look like.

And then life happens.

Sometimes the change is exciting. Other times, it comes through loss, trauma, disappointment, illness, the ending of a relationship, a career shift, or an experience that completely changes the way we see ourselves.

Those moments can create a very distinct dividing line:

Who I was before this happened—and who I became afterward.

Barb understands that divide personally.

Today, she is a trauma recovery educator, therapist, mentor, speaker, author, and creator of The Ascendance Method™. But the work she does didn’t simply come from studying trauma from a distance.

It grew from a journey.

A journey that asked her to understand the hidden patterns trauma can leave behind and, ultimately, what it takes to move beyond surviving and begin reclaiming your life.

The Patterns We Don’t Always Recognize

One of the difficult things about trauma is that its influence doesn’t always announce itself.

Sometimes it appears in the choices we make.

The relationships we tolerate.

The boundaries we struggle to create.

The way we respond when we feel threatened, rejected, abandoned, or misunderstood.

Or even in the stories we continue telling ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of becoming.

We can spend years thinking, This is just who I am, without realizing that some of our behaviors were created to help us survive something we experienced long ago.

And perhaps one of the most powerful parts of healing is beginning to recognize the difference between who we truly are and who we learned to become in order to survive.

That awareness creates choice.

And choice creates the possibility for something different.

Healing Doesn’t Erase the Journey

I don’t believe healing requires us to pretend difficult experiences were somehow wonderful because we eventually learned something from them.

Some experiences are painful.

Some are unfair.

Some leave scars.

We can acknowledge that truth while also recognizing that those experiences do not have to be the final authority over the rest of our lives.

There can come a point when the question begins to change.

Instead of only asking:

“Why did this happen to me?”

We may eventually begin asking:

“Who am I becoming because I survived it?”

Not because the experience was necessary.

Not because we should be grateful for the pain.

But because we are still here.

And what we choose to do with the life that remains belongs to us.

When the Journey Becomes Part of the Purpose

This is something I continue to recognize in my own life.

There are chapters of my journey I never would have written for myself. There were endings I didn’t understand when they happened and experiences that forced me to question who I was, what I wanted, and where I belonged.

Looking backward, though, I can see how many of those moments redirected me.

They stripped away identities that no longer fit.

They made me question beliefs I had carried for years.

And eventually, they brought me closer to the work I am doing today.

That doesn’t mean every painful experience needs to become a business, a mission, or a calling.

Sometimes healing is simply healing.

But sometimes the thing we struggled so hard to understand becomes the very thing that allows us to sit across from another person and say:

“I understand. I’ve walked through something too.”

And suddenly our experience becomes connection.

Our wisdom becomes service.

Our survival becomes something more.

Maybe You Didn’t Choose This Chapter

If you’re currently standing in a chapter of your life you never expected, you don’t have to know what it means yet.

You don’t have to immediately discover the lesson.

You don’t have to turn the pain into purpose before you’re ready.

But you can remain curious about who is emerging from the experience.

What are you beginning to see differently?

What are you no longer willing to accept?

What have you discovered about your own strength?

What parts of yourself are asking to be reclaimed?

And perhaps most importantly:

Who are you becoming now?

Because sometimes we don’t choose the journey.

Sometimes the journey chooses us.

But somewhere along the way, we get to begin choosing how the next chapter will be written.
