When You Stop Giving Your Power Away

There are moments in life when we suddenly realize how much of our power we have placed in someone else’s hands.

Sometimes it happens in a relationship. Sometimes it comes through the expectations of family, society, or the roles we have learned to play. Other times, we give our power to an outside authority because we have stopped trusting what we feel, what we need, or what we already know.

Giving your power away does not always look dramatic. It can happen quietly every time you silence yourself to keep the peace, question your intuition because someone disagrees, or seek permission to become who you feel called to be.

In this episode of Just Be True ~ A Soul-Led Podcast, I sit down with April DeMille, psychic medium, life coach, and host of the Own Your Own Essence Podcast, for an honest conversation about self-trust, boundaries, intuition, healing, and what it means to reclaim your personal power.

The Quiet Ways We Give Away Our Power

Most of us do not consciously decide to give our power away. It often happens gradually.

We begin looking to other people to confirm whether our feelings are valid. We ignore our own discomfort because we do not want to disappoint someone. We remain silent when something does not feel right. We shrink parts of ourselves to fit inside relationships, environments, or expectations that no longer reflect who we are.

Over time, the voices around us can become louder than the voice within us.

Giving your power away can look like:

  • Constantly second-guessing your decisions
  • Needing reassurance before trusting what you feel
  • Ignoring your intuition to avoid conflict
  • Remaining in situations that repeatedly diminish you
  • Allowing someone else’s opinion to determine your worth
  • Believing that setting a boundary makes you selfish
  • Waiting for permission to change, grow, or choose differently

The difficult part is that many of these behaviors can appear loving, loyal, or responsible from the outside. But there is a difference between caring for others and abandoning yourself in the process.

Self-Trust Is Often the First Thing We Lose

When your feelings, experiences, or perceptions have been repeatedly dismissed, you may begin questioning your ability to understand your own life.

You may sense that something is wrong but immediately talk yourself out of it. You may feel drawn toward a new direction but convince yourself that it is unrealistic. You may know that a boundary is needed but worry more about the other person’s reaction than your own emotional well-being.

Each time you override your inner knowing, the connection to yourself becomes a little quieter.

Rebuilding self-trust begins by noticing these moments without judgment. It means becoming curious about where your choices are coming from.

Are you choosing from your own truth—or from fear, conditioning, guilt, or someone else’s expectations?

Your intuition may not always provide a complete plan, but it often offers the next honest step. Reclaiming your power begins when you become willing to listen.

Boundaries Are an Expression of Self-Respect

Boundaries are often misunderstood as walls, punishment, or rejection. In reality, a healthy boundary is a clear expression of what you need to remain connected to yourself.

A boundary might mean saying no without providing a lengthy explanation. It may mean stepping away from a conversation when disrespect enters the room. It could mean no longer carrying emotional responsibilities that were never yours to hold.

Boundaries do not control what another person chooses to do. They clarify what you will choose for yourself.

When you begin setting boundaries, some people may resist—especially if they benefited from your lack of them. Their discomfort does not automatically mean your boundary is wrong. Sometimes it simply reveals that the relationship was built around a version of you who was more willing to remain silent.

Reclaiming your power does not mean becoming hardened or uncaring. It means recognizing that compassion for others should not require the abandonment of yourself.

Returning to Your Own Essence

April’s work centers on the idea of owning your own essence: remembering who you are beneath the experiences, expectations, and outside voices that have shaped you.

Your essence is not the role you perform for others. It is not the identity created through a painful relationship, a difficult season, or someone else’s perception of you. It is the deeper truth that remains underneath everything you have been taught to believe you should be.

Returning to that truth requires honesty.

It asks you to recognize where you have been shrinking, where you have been seeking permission, and where fear has been making decisions on your behalf. It also asks you to reconnect with the part of yourself that has continued whispering, even when you were not ready to listen.

That inner voice may say:

This no longer feels right.

I need something different.

I deserve to be heard.

I am ready to choose myself.

These messages are not selfish. They are invitations to come home to yourself.

Healing Is Not About Pretending Everything Is Fine

There is a temptation within spiritual spaces to rush toward forgiveness, positivity, or a higher meaning before we have fully acknowledged what happened.

Genuine healing does not require you to deny anger, grief, disappointment, or pain. It allows you to feel what is present, understand what it is revealing, and decide what you want to carry forward.

You can be spiritual and still have boundaries.

You can forgive and still choose distance.

You can love someone and recognize that their presence is no longer healthy for you.

You can feel compassion for another person’s wounds without making those wounds your responsibility.

Healing becomes empowering when it leads you back to greater self-awareness, clearer choices, and a more honest relationship with yourself.

Personal Power Is About Choice, Not Control

Reclaiming your power does not mean controlling every outcome or knowing exactly what will happen next. It means remembering that you have choices.

You can choose what you participate in. You can decide which voices influence you. You can question beliefs that were handed to you. You can change direction when something no longer aligns. You can honor your intuition even when other people do not understand it.

Personal power is the ability to remain connected to yourself while life continues to change around you.

It is choosing authenticity over approval.

It is allowing your voice to take up space.

It is trusting that you do not need someone else’s permission to become more fully who you are.

A Question to Carry With You

As you listen to this episode, consider:

Where in your life might you still be giving someone or something else the authority to tell you who you are, what you feel, or what you already know?

You do not have to reclaim everything at once. Begin with one honest moment. One boundary. One decision that reflects your own knowing. One opportunity to listen to yourself instead of immediately looking outside yourself for the answer.

Each time you honor what you feel, speak your truth, or make a choice that aligns with who you are becoming, you strengthen the relationship you have with yourself.

And that is where your power has been waiting.
